A Bulldog's Bucket List

Whether you learn the nonsensical Och Tamale chant with new and future friends during New Student Orientation Week, explore Southern California with fellow adventurers on an Outdoor Programs trip, or spend an unforgettable semester in Salzburg, you will become an integral part of the Redlands community. Follow along as we unveil a new, cherished tradition each week.

#1.  Explore Outdoor Programs
Adventure throughout Southern California with student-run Outdoor Programs. Sea-kayak around the Channel Islands, hike down into the Grand Canyon, take a weekend excursion to rock climb in Joshua Tree National Park or sled in Big Bear. Learn about yourself and the incredible environment surrounding you at the University of Redlands! Don't miss out on our wonderful First Year Journey (FYJ) opportunities made especially for entering students. You can learn more about FYJ's here.

#2. Attend Convocations and Lectures
In keeping with the University's mission of educating the heart and mind, incredible speakers are brought to campus to inspire students to think beyond themselves. Your exposure to these speakers begins during your first week on campus at the President's Welcome Convocation. Powerful academics, authors, actors, athletes, activists, and more are catalysts for students to engage in powerful conversations. Recent speakers include Dr. Jane Goodall, Jon Meacham, Richard Edmond-Vargas, Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda, former United States Senator Barbara Boxer, and pictured here, Los Angeles street artist Man One.

#3.  Research with Your Professors

Bulldogs have the opportunity to research alongside dynamic faculty in labs or other research spaces close to our Southern California campus throughout the mountains, desert, and California coast. At Redlands, you can collect, analyze, present upon, and publish findings alongside your faculty mentor in departments across programs of study -- from Biochemistry to Spatial Studies and beyond.

#4. Give Back Through Bulldogs in Service

Every year Bulldogs extend their learning beyond the classroom to complete more than 120,000 hours of community service. From mentoring local youth as a Big Buddy, to building homes for families in Central America, or raising funds for disaster relief and the fight against cancer, you can immerse yourself in endless opportunities to make the world a better place.

#5.  Learn the Och Tamale Chant
All new Bulldogs learn the nonsensical Och Tamale chant on the steps of the Administration Building on the first day of New Student Orientation. Don't worry, you'll have it memorized in no time!

#6. Attend the School of Music's Feast of Lights

The Feast of Lights, a University of Redlands tradition since 1948, is a tapestry of poetry, music, and drama. Featuring choral, orchestral, and organ performances by School of Music students and faculty in the historic Memorial Chapel, the Feast of Lights is a tradition of the holiday season. No matter the time of year, Bulldogs embrace and hone their talents in the arts and on the stage. Come express yourself at Redlands!

#7. Study Outside Year Round
With an average daily temperature of 80°, it's no wonder Bulldogs love to study outside year round. Many students find favorite study areas across our beautiful 160 acre campus. You might like the shade of an oak tree on our quad, the rose garden by Hall of Letters, or the courtyard of the Stauffer Complex. What sunny spot will you pick as a Bulldog?

#8. Attend Rah! Rah! Redlands!
Whether you are on the field participating in one of our 21 NCAA DIII teams or cheering on your friends, being a Bulldog means that you’re part of the team. Our maroon and grey pride runs deep. Mark your calendar for the annual Rah Rah Redlands event filled with tailgating, music, food, fun, and the 2021 SCIAC champion football team taking the field to bring home another victory.

#9. Study Abroad
The University of Redlands helps students embark on adventures across the country and around the globe. We offer more than 80 study away destinations, from Austria to Iceland to Panama. Because your financial aid travels with you, seeing the world is not only easy but accessible. Studying abroad is part of life as a Bulldog!

10. Graduate from the University of Redlands

In a few short years, you could be walking across the stage in a cap and gown! Surrounded by friends, family, mentors, and impressive speakers, commencement at Redlands is a spectacle of celebration, color, and excitement. As a Bulldog for life, you will see the world, serve others, ask challenging questions, and experience your education hands-on.
