The Resident Director (RD) is responsible for the creation and maintenance of a sense of community within an environment that is conducive to engagement, growth, learning and meaningful interpersonal relationships. The Office of Residence Life and Housing is committed to providing students with resources and experiences that will complement their academics. As a result, all RDs have collaborative positions in other areas of Student Affairs and at the University. The nature of this position exists to supplement the overall co-curricular goals of a residential campus, increase collaboration across Student Affairs and other campus partners, and enhance professional development opportunities for those in the role. The RDs are supervised by the Director and Residence Life and Housing in collaboration with co-supervisors other departments where work is contributed.
Responsibilities of the position include:
• Supervising 6-10 Community Assistants; weekly individual and group meetings; conducting annual performance evaluations.
• Managing community and program development for assigned residence communities.
• Assisting in the development of interpersonal relationships, social interactions, and community cohesiveness between staff, residents, and University officials and other constituents.
• Participating in the creation, facilitation, and assessment of all staff trainings.
• Identifying students with personal, behavioral and/or developmental concerns and referring them to appropriate resources for consultation and assistance; writing communication records; adjudicating student conduct cases; enforcing all campus policies, rules and regulations, and the hall’s community standards; participating in the on-campus duty rotation for crisis intervention and emergency coverage.
• Participate as a campus first-responder on the Administrator on Call (AOC) rotation.
• Participating in special assignments, annual events and projects as assigned through Student Affairs.
• Inspiring student engagement and co-curricular learning through a collateral assignment or additional responsibilities in the following departments:
o Community Standards and Wellbeing:
Coordinate follow-up for students of concern and maintain detailed records of incidents, conduct, and follow-up.
Case Management support for the CARE Team
Facilitate campus-wide collaboration of prevention efforts around holistic wellness issues; facilitate trainings for student leaders around party management and peer education.
o Johnston College:
Coordinate alumni and fundraising events, including the 50th Renewal and Vintage Johnston.
Collaborate with Admissions for recruitment and relationship creation with feeder schools and support new student experience in the program, with support from supervised student worker positions.
o Recreation (Outdoor Programs, Intramural/Club Sports):
Facilitate informational sessions; hire, schedule, and supervise student workers and activities for intramural sports, club sports, and/or Outdoor Programs; maintain web presence and IM Leagues system.
o Residence Life and Housing:
Development and coordination of Living-Learning Communities such as Catalyst in Fairmont Hall, Environmental Consciousness in Merriam Hall, Global Quarter in North Hall, and the Music Floor in Anderson Hall.
Oversight and maintenance of Organizational Houses, including monthly walkthroughs for health and safety, conduct, and facilities inspections
o Title IX Office
Assist in Title IX investigations
A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred. At least six (6) months of similar student related work. The ideal candidate is committed to an understanding of the values of higher education, student and community development, and diversity. Candidate must have the sensitivity and ability to work with the traditional college age student, advise staff, develop and implement programs, produce effective outcomes, work effectively both individually and with groups, use independent judgment and display decision-making ability. The ideal candidate will possess the skills and the ability to supervise, work effectively in a group, and contribute to the personal success of residents. Experience or leadership in a residence hall or similar setting, plus a general knowledge in understanding of residence hall operations and objectives required, to include counseling/advising, student conduct, administration and facility operations. Must have a good understanding and knowledge of safety regulations and practices and the ability to handle emergency situations. Flexibility to adjust work schedule to meet the needs of students and staff is necessary and will require attendance at evening and weekend events, as well as overnight retreats and training. Experience using the Internet, e-mail and competence using a variety of Windows-based computer programs is desired. Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty and staff.
