DESCRIPTION:   Under limited supervision, is responsible for all aspects of support and operation of the biology and chemistry laboratories.

  • Maintains detailed inventory and requisitions of chemistry/biology stockrooms as required under the Chemical Hygiene Plan and outside regulatory agencies, including hazardous waste handling and disposal.
  • Orders all chemicals and supplies which involves writing purchase orders, maintaining open accounts with various vendors, coordinating with faculty as to specifications and prices as well as receiving the orders and adding them to the inventory.
  • Ability to prepare cell cultures, maintain stocks of microorganisms, prepares gels for electrophoresis, and performs molecular biology procedures in support of faculty teaching and research projects if needed.
  • Coordinates and oversees execution of all environmental health and safety responsibilities for the Science Center including but not limited to the following: collection, neutralization and treatment of all hazardous materials generated within the science labs; maintenance of MSDS files; waste disposal; periodic safety checks of emergency showers, eye washes, drains, etc.
  • Maintains written protocols for all experimental lab procedures.
  • The knowledge and capability to assist with preparation and operation of all labs including set-up of equipment and takedown, solution and culture preparation, preparation of plates and media; to assist with maintenance of strains and organisms as requested by faculty; disassembles and cleans up labs when finished. Determines material needs from written protocols.
  • Supervises, recommends discipline, and/or makes hiring decisions for student workers and laboratory assistants in accordance with University Policies.
  • Submits equipment to appropriate individuals for repair and maintenance as needed.
  • Adheres to all safety and housekeeping policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned or directed.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or Chemistry plus three (3) years of related experience in a similar position or equivalent combination thereof. At least one semester of organic chemistry and at least one semester of biology as well as experience in molecular biology techniques and protocol are highly desired. Successful candidate will have working knowledge of chemistry and biology and the equipment and chemicals used in laboratory experiments, be computer literate, an be able to demonstrate ability to perform computations used in solution making. S/he must have knowledge of rules and regulations of health and safety, including hazardous materials handling and disposal. Excellent organizational and communications skills, both verbal and in writing; ability to follow technical manuals; work cooperatively with co-workers, supervisors, faculty, students, and outside service representatives; a strong mechanical aptitude; and a high level of independent judgment are essential. A valid driver's license with a good driving record and own personal vehicle is required for procurement of items from local stores. A physical must be successfully completed after offer of employment. Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
