School of Education Study Away

Our increasingly interconnected world creates movements of ideas and people that profoundly affect the work of educators and counselors. The School of Education provides students with opportunities to develop the global literacy necessary to understand and address diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives.

Study Away

Study away courses consists of a wide range of comprehensive experiences for our students. For example, the curricula of all our programs heavily emphasize multiculturalism.

Study Away Courses

Study away courses explore, examine, and understand current issues related to culture and globalization utilizing socially-situated theoretical perspectives in framing approaches to curriculum, instruction, and assessment. These courses are opportunities to study major developments and implications associated with globalization and culture that are shaping education.

Study away courses exposure participants to international themes in the study of culture, globalization, and education. The courses will culminate in a reflective, personal journal-type conceptual paper or in a comprehensive research paper that covers international themes related to culture, globalization, and educational justice.

Study away courses may be applied to elective credit upon approval. Please contact your advisor for more information. 

 


Summer 2023: Study Away in Cuba

Are you interested in an opportunity to see and experience Cuba firsthand?

The School of Education has a potential Study Away opportunity taking place Summer 2023 to Cuba. Travel dates will be June 7-21, 2023.

This two-week trip to Cuba offers you the opportunity to live with Cuban families while studying the history, politics, and social institutions that structure much of Cuban society. During this study away, you will spend time considering Cuban society in relation to the policies and practices of the current U.S. political, economic, and educational systems.

Highlights of This Study Away:

  • Visits to schools and universities, including a two-day interactive visit to an arts high school
  • A meeting with citizen groups advocating for the rights of LGBTQI+ people
  • A trip to the world-renowned Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM)
  • An overnight visit to Playa Giron (Bay of Pigs)
  • An opportunity to visit a Cuban beach and tobacco farm
