Creative Writing

The Creative Writing Department at the University of Redlands offers one of the most intensive creative writing majors available to undergraduates in the United States. Students explore poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction in focused workshops led by a faculty of committed and accomplished poets; novel and short story writers; and nonfiction writers experienced in memoirs, personal essays, travel writing, cultural criticism, and more.

About

The intimate nature of the liberal arts university combined with the small class size of the program’s workshops and seminars offer students a unique and enriching setting for an in-depth study of literature from a writer’s perspective and a vigorous pursuit of creative expression and professional craft. At the culmination of their efforts, students in the program develop a significant manuscript of their writing in close consultation with faculty members—a capstone project that often serves as a student’s writing sample if they choose to pursue graduate work or a writing career. Students also produce the Redlands Review, the program’s literary magazine. In addition to coursework, the Creative Writing Department regularly hosts a Visiting Writers Series, giving students the chance to interact with exciting current authors.
