Employee group hosts fall clothing drive to benefit homeless youth

The University of Redlands Staff and Administrators Assembly (URSAA) is supporting the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools by holding a fall clothing drive benefitting the Children Deserve Success Homeless Education Program.

“URSAA supports events like this throughout the year to benefit families in need who are living in hotels or shelters,” says Trisha Aurelio, technical services supervisor at the U of R library who is an URSAA chairperson. “We want to make sure that the children in those families are supported while they’re going to school. We decided to support the county superintendent for this event to gather a greater number of donations.”

In collaboration with Goodwill of Southern California, the donations received during this drive will be exchanged for Goodwill gift certificates. The gift certificates will be given to families within the county to shop at local Goodwill stores. The families and their children will be able to purchase clothing for school and any other items or supplies they may need for the school year.

Collection boxes are located across the U of R campus and are accepting donations from non-University community members. They can be found in the lobbies of the Administration Building, Hornby Hall, and Willis Center, and in the School of Education student lounge. Shoes, accessories, and gently worn clothing will be accepted, as well as blankets, sheets, and towels.

URSAA regularly holds hygiene, canned food, and toy drives throughout the year. “In December, during “Celebrate the Holidays” in the lobby of the Administration Building, we’ve collected shampoo and other hygiene items,” says Aurelio. “Those items were made into packages that were sent to the Blessing Center to be given out to people in need within the Redlands community.”

Donations for the fall clothing drive are being accepted in the collection boxes on campus from now until September 14.
