Kudos Corner: Student Honors

A host of student awards and honors were announced as part of commencement season at the University of Redlands. The U of R School of Education held a dinner and the School of Business held a lunch to honor their award winners; the College of Arts and Sciences held an Honors Convocation to recognize high achievement across many disciplines and areas of student life; individual departments also celebrated outstanding students.

Here are the awardees, listed alphabetically under each school presenting the awards; honor society members (including scholar-athletes) follow at the end.

College of Arts and Sciences

Talia Adams—Tutor of the Year Award, given to the tutor who has demonstrated outstanding enthusiasm, reliability, a positive attitude, and dedication in tutoring their subject matter within the tutoring program

Max Auer—The Allen R. Killpatrick Pi Award, established in 2008 by Allen Killpatrick, a long-serving U of R math professor, and his family, to recognize an outstanding sophomore mathematics student who shows P=promise and I=interest in mathematics

  • John Wiley Memorial Award, for excellent work in International Relations
  • Frank Serrao Male Senior Student-Athlete of the Year Award, sponsored by the Bulldog Bench and presented to the most outstanding male senior Student-Athlete in recognition of excellence in academia and athletics

Robert Brito—Outstanding Senior in Business Administration, voted by the faculty as both an excellent scholar and a major contributor to the department, campus, and outside communities, including varsity sports and service

  • Outstanding Public Policy Scholar, presented to one or more outstanding graduating seniors in public policy who have not only demonstrated excellence in their coursework and/or leadership while at the university, but also have tremendous potential for future careers in public policy and public service
  • Charlotte Burgess Community Impact Award, honoring a student or group positively impacting the community through fundraising, advocacy work, or direct service 

Louis Castillo—Outstanding Senior in Business Administration, voted by the faculty as both an excellent scholar and a major contributor to the department, campus, and outside communities, including varsity sports and service

  • Student Employee of the Year Award, given annually to an outstanding student employee who has made a unique contribution to the University and has demonstrated exceptional reliability, quality of work, initiative, and professionalism

Maria Paula Cevallos Crespo—Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award, awarded to an outstanding junior music major, based on musical promise and academic achievement

Owen Dickson—Edmund C. Jaeger Award, given for exceptional scholarship to a junior biology student planning a career in teaching or research

Gal Dimand

  • Judson Sanderson Award, presented to an outstanding senior mathematics major
  • David Miller Award, presented in memory of David Miller, whom we lost months from his graduation in 2009, and in honor of the graduating physics student who exemplifies David's spirit: the personal integrity, the infectious enthusiasm, and the strength to chart his own course

Sean Dunnington—Outstanding Senior Award, honoring a senior selected by a vote of faculty and administrators who has contributed the most to their class and to life at the University of Redlands 

Anna Duvall—Velma Hooper McCall Award, presented to a woman in the junior class who has demonstrated exemplary academic achievement, is an involved student, and is held in high regard by her peers and faculty members

Lisa Elliott—Douglas R. Moore Distinguished Service Award, conferred by the University of Redlands Alumni Association on a student who exemplifies the alumni tradition of service to the community and/or University 

Adrianna Fellows—Taylor Family Community Service Award, presented to a student who has made service a constant in his or her life; recipients embrace the spirit and art of service through involvement in civic duties such as fundraising, volunteering work, service membership, and leadership by involving others in service

Justice Fernandez-Williams—Best in Magazine for Redlands Review, presented by the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies

Nina Fletcher—Best paper at Women and Gender Studies Conference, presented by the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies

  • George Slusser Award in French, established in memory of the comparative literature scholar George Slusser, longtime chair of the Eaton Conference and curator of the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy at the University of California, Riverside

Sean Todd—Outstanding Scholar in Business Administration, presented to a student voted by the faculty as possessing the highest demonstrated academic excellence with complex materials, languages, and/or double majors

Allison Totzke—Outstanding Senior in Communicative Disorders Award, given to a senior who has demonstrated overall excellence as an undergraduate student in Communication Sciences and Disorders who has the potential for making a significant contribution to the profession

Laura Vazquez—Phi Alpha Theta Award, presented by the History Department to an outstanding senior who excels in academic achievement and service to the study of history at the University

Aileen Calderon—Outstanding Higher Education Graduate Student Award, presented annually to a master’s candidate in the Higher Education program who excels in coursework and research, understands all aspects of higher education, and shows great promise for a career in higher education

Sara Calderon—Outstanding Counseling Graduate Student Award, presented annually to a master’s candidate in counseling who demonstrates exemplary performance in coursework, fieldwork, and overall scholarship and who shows tremendous promise of contributing to the counseling profession as evidenced by exceptional leadership, effective collaboration, and a strong commitment to advocacy

Victoria Cachapero—Dorothy D. Arthur Endowed Scholarship, presented to a fifth-year Preliminary Teacher Credential candidate involved in student teaching, with a potential to become an outstanding classroom teacher and commitment to education as a profession 

William Genung—Outstanding Curriculum & Instruction Graduate Student Award, presented annually to a master’s candidate in the Curriculum and Instruction program who excels in the academic requirements of the program, emerges as a leader in their cohort group, and is deeply committed to the teaching profession

Jason Jeffrey—Gordon C. Atkins Award, presented to a master’s degree candidate who exemplifies U of R Whitehead College Provost Gordon Atkins’ high standards and lifelong commitment to expanding higher education opportunities for all students, regardless of age 

Nader Karimi—Dorothy Inghram Endowed Education Scholarship, presented to a student in the Department of Counseling and Human Services with a passion for educational justice (see also “Brothers foster counseling careers in U of R School of Education”)

Jennifer King—Outstanding Doctoral Student Award, presented annually to a doctoral candidate in the Department of Leadership and Higher Education Ed.D. program who excels in coursework and research, understands all aspects of educational justice, and shows great promise for a career in education

Katherine Paul—Outstanding Clinical Mental Health Graduate Student Award, presented annually to a master’s candidate in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program who excels in coursework and research, understands all aspects of clinical mental health, and shows great promise for a career in the field.

Michelle Rogers—Alpha Delta Kappa Outstanding Student Award, presented annually to an outstanding graduating master’s or doctoral student in the Department of Leadership and Higher Education that demonstrates a strong commitment to education

Tasha Rosser—Alpha Delta Kappa outstanding student award, presented annually to an outstanding undergraduate student who demonstrates a strong commitment to education
