U of R celebrates Pride Month

The Pride flag is flying over the University of Redlands, a sign that the month-long celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community has begun.

Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall Uprising in 1969, a turning point in outlawing discriminatory laws and practices and the beginning of the gay rights movement. The Uprising was a response to a police raid of the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June 28, 1969, inciting a six-day protest. Since the uprising, the journey to Pride Month 2024 has been marked by significant milestones, activism, and progress for the LGBTQIA+ community.

On campus

In the evenings, the University will illuminate the Memorial Chapel pillars in rainbow colors, and several organizations, including Outdoor Programs, URSA, the PRIDE Center, the Maker Space, and the Armacost Library, will host events for the University community throughout the month.

URSA
Water Aerobics — June 5, 3 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Come OUT of the office and join URSA for water aerobics. Meet in the Thompson Aquatic Center pool for H2O aerobics with The Energy Lab. Bring a swimsuit and a towel.

Outdoor Programs
OUTdoor Journaling — June 6, 11 a.m. – noon
Spend some time with Bree Lindsey and Outdoor Programs to experience the joys of nature journaling. During this activity, participants will take time for themselves, enjoy each other's company, and explore nature. This is a very chill activity that will be mostly seated. Meet outside the Hall of Letters on the front porch at 11 a.m. Bring something to write with, sun protection, and a water bottle.

PRIDE Center
Queer Lunch — June 11, 18, and 25 at noon
Come to the PRIDE center, located on the first floor of Hunsaker, to have lunch with community. No formal activities will be planned, just a space to hang out.

Maker Space
Maker PRIDE — June 27, 11 a.m. – noon
Come to the Makerspace, Room 112 in the Armacost building, to paint and learn about the PRIDE flags. Also, hear the animatronics tell the Coming Out stories of the University of Redlands community. This event is a collaboration with URSA.
