The Art Major

Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art

Arts Foundation

All studio concentrations share the following requirements:

  • ART 131 Drawing

  • ART 132 2-D Design

  • ART 145 Introduction to Sculpture (not required for art therapy)

  • ART 159 Digital Imaging (not required for art therapy)

  • One Art History course

(Students are advised to take as many art history courses as possible.)

Areas of Concentration

Additionally, Art majors will choose one of the following areas of concentration:

Sculpture/Ceramics
  • ART 140 Introduction to Ceramics

  • ART 347 Intermediate Sculpture
    (Prerequisite - At least 1 of the following foundation courses {131, 132, 159}, ART 145, and junior standing)

Drawing /Painting
  • ART 233 Painting

  • ART 360 Beyond the Canvas

               OR

  • ART 360 Painting the Figure
    (Prerequisite - At least 2 of the following studio foundation courses, ART 233, and junior standing)

Graphic Design
  • ART 252 Introduction to Graphic Design

  • ART 352 Intermediate Graphic Design
    (Prerequisite - At least 2 of the studio foundation courses, ART 252, and junior standing)

Recommended: ART 251 Typography

Photography
  • ART 235 Introduction to Photography

  • ART 339 Intermediate Photography
    (Prerequisite - At least 2 of the studio foundation courses, ART 235, and junior standing)

Art Therapy
  • ART 131 Drawing and ART 132 2-D Design (Required Foundation Courses)
  • ART 140 Introduction to Ceramics
  • ART 233 Painting
  • ART 360 Beyond the Canvas / Painting the Figure OR ART 240 Intermediate Ceramics
  • One Art History course
  • ART 434 Advanced Projects: Painting OR ART 448 Advanced Projects: Ceramics
  • PSYCH 100 Introduction to Psychology
  • PSYCH 344 Abnormal Psychology
  • PSYCH 335 Developmental Psychology

Recommended Additional PSYCH:

  • PSYCH 210 Personality Theories
  • PSYCH 349 Social Psychology
  • PSYCH 440 Counseling  (permission required)
  • Art therapy internship

The Capstone

  • ART 434 or ART 436 or ART 448 or ART 456 Advanced Projects in your are of concentration
    (Prerequisite - Intermediate course in your area of concentration)
  • ART 495 Senior Project

Art Education

The Art Department, in partnership with the School of Education, offers a route to a Single Subject California Preliminary Teaching Credential, which is required to teach Art in California Public High Schools.

(9 courses Art major + 11 courses Education major)

  • Step 1 - Complete the Studio Foundation courses & Additional Requirements for the Art major
  • Step 2 - Complete one of the Art major Areas of Concentration (excluding Art Therapy)
  • Step 3 - Complete Art major Capstone

  • Step 4 - ADMISSION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF REDLANDS SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

The Art Minor

Choose two courses:

  • Three studio art courses, at least one of which is at the 200 level or above
