Study Away

Education abroad is an integral aspect of the educational experience at Redlands, and we have a rich tradition of broadening student growth and learning through participation in international and domestic study away programs. Our goal is to create opportunities for students and faculty to explore diverse cultures and languages en route to becoming more broad-minded, interculturally adept, and knowledgeable citizens of the global community.

University International Travel

The University of Redlands has a long history of supporting faculty, staff and student international travel. 

Scope of Policy

The University International Travel and Activities Policy governs all international travel and activities sponsored or co-sponsored by the University of Redlands. This includes individual faculty/staff travel, undergraduate, graduate, professional degree or certificate programs, or any other programs arranged and/or sponsored by a campus, a school, the College, or a department that in any way relates to University business.

University-Sponsored International Travel

What is University sponsored travel?

University-sponsored travel is defined as university faculty, staff, postdoctoral researchers, or graduate assistants who are traveling due to their position as an employee of the University. Personal travel is excluded. Funding for University-sponsored travel must be provided by one or more of the following:

    1. the University; 
    2. a grant or contract that is managed by the University;
    3. and/or a third party, but the purpose of the travel is due to the traveler’s position within the University.

Individual Faculty/Staff Travel

University-sponsored individual faculty/staff international travel is travel funded by or supported through resources, such as employee time or funding, while employed by the University of Redlands. 

Group International Travel

International group travel entails faculty/staff travel with students and/or external members, e.g., boards, alumni groups or other groups.

University-sponsored group travel includes global education opportunities organized, developed, or administered by specific schools and colleges, departments, or University of Redlands employees as approved by the International Travel and Activities Advisory Committee. Education abroad opportunities include but are not limited to credit-bearing and non-credit bearing experiences such as: study abroad programs, May Term travel courses, internships, field studies, service learning, research, volunteer or work programs, immersion programs, fellowships, professional development activities, athletic teams travel, alumni travel programs, student club/organization trips, conferences and more. 

Travel Not Sponsored by the University

This is international travel that has no formal affiliation with the University of Redlands.  

Some examples include personal travel, vacations and any programs or internships abroad that students pursue outside of the University of Redlands.

Undergraduate Student

Travel/funding requires approval through the University process

The University of Redlands does not review or fund this travel. Students may need to withdraw from the University if travel interferes with completing the academic year (i.e. participating on a study away semester program that wasn’t approved through the CAS Study Away Office.)

Graduate Student

Travel/funding requires approval through the University process

The University of Redlands does not review or fund this travel.

Faculty or Staff

Travel/funding requires approval through the University process

The University of Redlands does not review or fund this travel.

Alumni or the Public

Travel/funding requires approval through the University process

The University of Redlands does not review or fund this travel.

 

Policy

The University of Redlands will support university-sponsored international travel to destinations with: 

Approval of International Travel 

The International Travel and Activities Approval Committee (ITAAC) grants approval for University-Sponsored international travel and activities.

All travel requires a U of R faculty/staff member to fulfill the role and responsibilities of the U of R Responsible On-Campus Officer or On-Site Leader which are defined in the travel procedures, and approval is contingent upon continual monitoring of current global and in-country health and safety conditions up to and through the official dates of the university program, initiative, or sponsored travel.  

Prior approval of University-sponsored travel may be rescinded at any time if travel involves destinations in which:

For risk management and insurance purposes, the University of Redlands requires all University sponsored international travel to be registered.
