What is the pre-health pathway?

The Pre-Health Pathway is designed to guide you in meeting the prerequisites for medical school or other health-related graduate programs while allowing you to choose a major that aligns with your interests. Whether you study biology, chemistry, or another field, you'll receive tailored support to fulfill both the requirements of your major and those of medical or health professional schools.

By combining Redlands' liberal arts approach with personalized guidance and small class sizes, you'll gain the critical thinking skills, scientific knowledge, and practical experience needed to excel in your academic journey and take the next steps toward a career in health care.

Why should you declare a concentration in pre-health at Redlands?

Declaring a concentration in Pre-Health at Redlands provides you with specialized support and comprehensive resources to help you develop into a competitive, well-rounded candidate for medical school or other health-related programs. A distinctive feature of this pathway program is the one-on-one advising each student receives from a dedicated health professions advisor.

Your assigned advisor will guide you through:

  • Selecting courses that meet the prerequisites for medical and health-related graduate programs
  • Preparing for entrance exams, such as the MCAT
  • Navigating graduate school application procedures, including securing letters of recommendation
  • Exploring career paths ranging from dentistry and nursing to optometry and pharmacy
  • Gaining hands-on experience through research opportunities, internships, and health-related volunteer work

At first, I didn’t know what I wanted to major in. But, I took a sample class on Admitted Students Day from my now-advisor, James Krueger. I fell in love with the major as soon as I took the 30-minute sample class. I love how passionate the professors have been in my major, and I’ve also grown to be very passionate about the program.

Classes you'll take

The minimum requirements for admission to most medical schools and graduate health programs in the United States include 8 to 16 semester credits of biology, 16 to 20 of chemistry, 4 to 8 of mathematics, 6 to 8 of physics, and 8 to 10 credits from English and the humanities.

Central Courses

Students generally take the following courses:

  • BIOL 200–201 Principles of Biology
  • CHEM 131–132 General Chemistry
  • CHEM 231–232 Organic Chemistry
  • ENGL 6 to 8 credits, including composition*
  • MATH 121 Calculus I or MATH 118, 119
  • PHYS 220–221 Fundamentals of Physics
  • PSYC 100 Introduction to Psychology

* in most cases, fulfilling the WF, WR, and WD requirements will suffice.

Recommended Courses

A student's application to medical or graduate school is strengthened if several of the following courses are taken:

  • BIOL 239 Molecular Genetics and Heredity
  • BIOL 344 Human Physiology
  • CHEM 320 Biochemistry
  • MATH 121 Calculus I or a statistics course
  • PHLI 216 Bioethics: Doctors and Patients
  • SOC 100 Introduction to Sociology

Many of these required and recommended courses are either full-year sequences, prerequisites for other courses, not offered every semester or year, or must be completed before taking the MCAT or admissions test. Students should plan a tentative schedule for their entire course of study early in their college journey.

Since health professions advisors are available to provide students with support with course selection, entrance exams, and application procedures, students should consult with their designated advisor to develop a tailored academic plan that aligns with their particular needs and interests.

Admissions requirements and application processes for health-related fields, such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, physical therapy, and physician assistant, all differ. Students exploring these career paths are encouraged to consult with the health professions advisors for personalized guidance and additional resources.
