Rod Goodyear Ph.D.

Emeritus Professor, Program Coordinator, Counseling and Psychotherapy
Teaching and Learning, Counseling and Human Services

About Dr. Goodyear

Teaching is personally and intellectually enriching to me.  It forces me to remain current in the areas I am teaching and, as important, I value the opportunity to learn from students through the observations they provide and -- especially -- their questions and challenges to received wisdom.

Professional Background

Rod's primary area of scholarship has been on the training and supervision of counselors and psychotherapists, with many publications on that topic. His supervision book (Bernard & Goodyear, 2019), now in its sixth edition, has become the standard in the field and is in translation in both China and South Korea.  The American Psychological Association awarded him the Award for Distinguished Lifetime Contributions to Psychology Education and Training in 2015.

Before coming to the University of Redlands, Rod Chaired the Counseling Psychology PhD program at the University of Southern California (where he is Emeritus Professor) for more than two decades. He was the 2015 President of the American Psychological Association’s Society for the Promotion of Psychotherapy (Division 29; website: http://societyforpsychotherapy.org/), has served as Chair of the Supervision and Training Section, APA Division of Counseling Psychology, and currently serves as Co-Convener of the International Interdisciplinary Conference on Clinical Supervision.

Rod’s Fulbright Distinguished Lectureship in the counseling psychology program at Yonsei University (Seoul) in 2012 awakened an interest in clinical supervision and psychotherapy internationally that now has become a dominant focus of his professional work.  He is particularly interested in ensuring that it is not simply a matter of transplanting North American and Western European ideas elsewhere, but rather one of mutual influence with a two-way exchange of ideas from one country or culture to another.  He was given the Society for the Advancement of Psychotherapy's Distinguished Award for the International Advancement of Psychotherapy in 2018.

Rod's international focus is reflected in professional and research collaborations with colleagues in China, South Korea, and Latin America (see, e.g., his list of recent publications).   He is especially proud of his affiliation with Hubei Oriental Insight Mental Health Institute (OI) which has resulted in multiple collaborations, including especially a training program (co-taught with Carol Falender) that now has trained over 500 Chinese counselors and psychologists in competency-based clinical supervision and the Masters in Counseling and Psychotherapy that is an OI/Redlands collaboration.
