The Art Department of the University of Redlands is pleased to present Sense, an exhibition of artwork by Mary Spelman Ince. The show opens to the public on Tuesday, October 4 and runs through Sunday, November 6, 2022 at the University Art Gallery. Everyone is welcome to attend the opening reception on Saturday, October 22 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Sense brings together a body of work that addresses music and mark making. It underscores the kinesthetic sense of mark making as a visual artist, and how it is influenced by our hearing sense, whether it is sound or silence. The artworks in this show will be accompanied by QR codes that enable the viewer to access specific pieces of chamber music with their phones. These synesthetic experiences will encourage awareness of how one sense affects another.

The inspiration for Mary’s interest in the synesthetic connections between art and music began in a contemporary art class here at the University of Redlands. Although Mary’s father, Dr. Leslie P. Spelman, was the Director of the University of Redlands School of Music for over 30 years, it was Dr. Vernon Dornbach who challenged his art students to attend a chamber concert in Watchorn Hall in an attempt to gain a better understanding of contemporary art in the 1960s.
