2Step Authentication

2Step authentication, also known as two-factor authentication or multi-factor authentication, provides an extra layer of security by requiring a user to log in with a username/password combo plus a second method of verifying the user's identity. The second method is something the user has physical access to, like a mobile phone or tablet. This ensures that even if a hacker manages to obtain a user's login credentials, the information is useless without access to the user's secondary device.

University employees and students are required to use 2Step when accessing University of Redlands applications and systems from off campus. The University's vendor for 2Step is Duo Security.

Requirements for 2Step authentication

2Step Authentication with Duo requires users to use a mobile device or tablet (preferably both)  and the Duo Mobile application.  The Duo Mobile application will send you a push notification to approve a log in, or you can use Duo Mobile to generate a passcode, that is then typed into the application to complete the authentication process.  In situations where a user does not have access to a mobile device or tablet, a Duo Token may be acquired from ITS.
