U.S. Constitution Credential Requirement

The CTC requires all teacher candidates to have knowledge of the U.S. Constitution. Teacher candidates are required to participate in coursework or an examination that covers the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution before they can be recommended for a preliminary or intern teaching credential.

Meet through Coursework:

Candidates can meet the U.S. Constitution requirement through coursework completed at a regionally-accredited community college, four-year college, or university. CTC has deemed that coursework for this requirement must be met by the grade of “C” or better or a pass, credit, or satisfactory grade.

Approved University of Redlands Undergraduate Courses

Students who attend the University of Redlands for their bachelor's degree may fulfill this requirement by taking Introduction to American Politics (POLI 111) or American History to 1877 (HIST 121).

Approved Courses From Other Institutions*

View approved courses from other institutions that fulfill the US Constitution requirement.

*If a student took a course at an institution that is not on the approved list but covered the U.S. Constitution, they may submit the course syllabus or course description from the university's catalog to the Office of Licensures and Credentialing (OLC) at olc@redlands.edu. It will then be determined if the course meets the requirement.

 

Meet through a California State University (CSU) Bachelor's Degree:

Candidates who have earned a bachelor's degree from a California State University (CSU) have met the U.S. Constitution credential requirement.

 

Meet through Examination:

Candidates can also meet the U.S. Constitution requirement by successfully completing the online U.S. Constitution Exam.

Teaching Interns and Preliminary Credential Applicants

If applying for a Teaching Internship, applicants must submit proof of meeting the U.S. Constitution requirement as part of their Internship Eligibility application.
